Dog Bones

Dogs need several treats and toys of stimulation. You can buy rawhide strips, squeaky toys and chew toys at most major pet supply stores. However, one of the best items available are plain old bones. Dogs love to chew bones and it is quite good for them. They get some scraps of meat and fat and chewing the bones helps to develop their teeth and jaw bones. Dogs can chew one single bone for months. Sometimes they just enjoy the texture while other times it is an effort to squeeze every last bit of marrow out of the bone.

Getting good dog bones is not that difficult. For the best dog bones ask at your local butcher shop. Quite often their more than happy to give you left over bones from their meat supply. Some butchers will actually accept donations for the humane society. If you don’t have local butchers then try your local supermarket. Quite often their willing to give away bones that they won’t use.

If actual dog bones are too difficult to come by, or you have an aversion to offering refrigerator space to them, you may want to consider dog bone treats. These are dog biscuits that are shapes and flavored like bones. They are something to reward your dog with when they learn something new or just a way to tell them that you love them. Most are highly nutritious and again are good for teeth.

If your dog has been especially good then perhaps spoiling him with dog bone candy is in order. These should only be given as treats. They are the equivalent to a human desert and should only be given on highly special occasions. Dog bone candy is nice to treat your pooch but use it sparingly.

Many of us love chicken including our dogs. Unfortunately dogs and chicken bones are not the best mix. Chicken is quite lean and good for dogs but the bones splinter and can get stuck in the dog’s throat. This can cause lots of discomfort for your dog and even cause them to choke. If you must give your dog chicken bones, boil them thoroughly. This will reduce the likelihood that they will splinter and make them mush softer and easier to chew.

Dog bones are a great way to reward your pooch. They are good for teeth and bone development as well as mentally stimulating. They will keep your dog occupies for hours and can quite often be gotten for free. One should be highly cautious with chicken bones, but beef, lamb and others should be perfectly fine. Give your dog a bone and let them get cracking. Their silence will be golden.
