There are generally two schools of thought on dog toys. Those who believe they have a practical use and those who believe they are another way to spoil your dog. Actually Dog toys can do both. They can occupy your dog so they don’t chew you possession and they can spoil your dog due to all of the types and shapes they come in.
Dog toys are useful for a dog’s development. Puppies need puppy toys to exert some of their energy as well as develop their jaws and teeth. Older dogs need them for mental and physical stimulation. There are breeds of dog such as retrievers that can be occupied for hours with little more than a ball or stick being thrown.
Whenever you get dog toys, make sure they are appropriate and safe for you particular breed of dog. Stay away from anything that is spongy unless recommended by a vet. Dogs will tear these apart and eat them. This can cause severe pain, discomfort and even death if the dog doesn’t pass it. Dog safe toys are easy to come by in any pet supply store and some vet clinics.
If you have a small dog, you should get some small dog toys. Read the label on the toys and they should tell you what age size and weight the toy is intended for. If the toy is too large the dog will likely just not play with it. However, a tenacious dog may hurt themselves if they are determined to have a go at that particular toy.
Some want indestructible dog toys. In truth there is no such thing. Eventually the toy will give way, but you can get good value for money. Pet stores again are great sources for information on this issue. If you need something that will stand up to a Great Dane then let them know. They will likely have something that will keep it occupied for a while.
It may be a good idea to get in the habit of dog toy storage. Keep the toys in one general area to avoid loosing them. You dog will get in the habit of getting them from a certain area. You may want to invest in a dog toy box. This way the toys are kept safe and out of the way.
Dog toys are great to get your dog stimulated. They help the development of the teeth and jaw muscles. For pet owners they can be a great way to spoil your dog. Either way, make sure your dog enjoys them. They are the ones that really matter.
