German Shepherd

The German shepherd unfortunately gets a bad reputation. In some countries in Western Europe they are actually classified as a dangerous breed of dog. This is largely due to mistreatment, improper training and bad breeding. The truth be told, A German shepherd can be an excellent pet and guard dog if they are treated well and trained properly.

The Germans shepherd is an incredibly intelligent dog. So much so that they are the Dog of choice for many police departments, fire stations and search and rescue organizations. They do train well for this type of work which in a way has contributed to their dangerous reputation.

The Germans shepherd is very loyal to one owner. They are good with families but will recognize a particular family member as the main owner. They are very brave dogs and will protect you and your family very often risking their own safety in the process.

Before getting a German shepherd, you should do some research. They do need a fair amount of exercise and stimulation. They are work dogs by nature and are happiest when they are active and have a job to do. A bored Germans shepherd can be quite destructive.

If you have the time to put in however, they can be your best friend. There are plenty of places to find Germans Shepherds. There are plenty of breeders that have German shepherd puppies for sale. Do some checking into the breeder. Remember, breeding problems have led to these dogs becoming vicious and this is something to avoid. The American Kennel club is an excellent source of information on good responsible breeders.

There are also German shepherd rescues. An animal shelter is another excellent place to find Germans shepherd adults and German shepherd puppies. An animal shelter won’t rehome a dog that is potentially dangerous. Most of them will work with them until they feel they are ready. A German shepherd is smart and will trust again but it will take time. However, once you win it over you’ll have the most loyal friend you have ever had.

Despite their bad reputation, a German shepherd can make a great pet. They do need exercise and stimulation and if you can offer it to them the relationship will be great. Do you homework and decide if they are the dog for you. Don’t let bad press scare you out of owning one of these great dogs.
