Siberian Husky

One of the most strikingly beautiful dog breeds known to man, the Siberian husky has become one of the most popular house and work breeds of Dog. Originating from the Siberian region of Russia, this breed has come up through some harsh circumstances. They had to endure the Siberian Winters where food was often scarce. They were also used for pulling sleds of supplies across hundreds of miles of frozen land.

Despite originating in these conditions the Siberian husky has quite a gentle temperament and does make an excellent house dog and friend. Those who take on a Siberian husky do need to prepare themselves for one energetic dog. They love to run and can do for miles without tiring out. Their natural instinct for this makes it dangerous to let them run off of a lead. Even if the area is traffic free, you may not see it again. Since they were originally sled dogs they have a natural instinct to pull, however this can be changed with proper conditioning and training.

A Siberian husky does need lots of exercise. They also need a properly fenced in yard when you’re not available to run them. Don’t be surprised if you come home to find huge holes in your yard. They love to do this and have been known to tunnel out of fenced yards and runs.

A Siberian husky is very affectionate but does not have the desire to please the owner that other dogs have. Training can be difficult due to this streak. It will take more than just a pat on the head and a kind word to entice this dog to do your stupid pet tricks. Some tasty treats will be in order. They are intelligent however and can be trained well. It just takes persistence and patience. Some raw hamburger probably wouldn’t hurt as well.

Siberian Huskies can live harmoniously with other pets. However, there instinct to hunt for small prey has made some dogs prone to snap and bite at smaller pets. It is recommended that the Siberian husky be raised with other pets from a puppy. They then learn to accept the others as part of the family.

The Siberian husky is a beautiful and affectionate dog. Those that own one need to be prepared to exercise and run with it. They can be difficult to train but will do what is asked with the right reward. With good exercise and training this dog can be a friend for life.
